Co-Founder and Pastry Chef: Florian Bourquin, Co-Founder and Brand Manager: Marie Chu

Project Overview:

Working with a local pastry brand, we streamlined their digital presence and modernised their sales process. Previously dependent on social media platforms without integrated payments the brand struggled with manual stock tracking, fragmented communication, and a cumbersome customer online shopping journey.

Aligning with the brand’s identity and vision, we designed and build a dedicated WordPress website with a clean, modern aesthetic. The platform offers an intuitive shopping experience, automates stock management and payments, and reduces manual workload. Additionally, we systemised design elements to ensure scalability for future growth.

Our sales drastically increased after our site went online. - Florian, Co-Founder and Pastry Chef

Redesigning the Shopping Journey for Efficiency

After meeting with our stakeholders and gaining insights, we mapped out the user flow of the Facebook shop and designed a new user flow for our website. By visualizing these flows, we streamlined and automated steps in the shopping process while consolidating the entire experience onto a single platform instead of four. This not only makes shopping more seamless for customers but also reduces the brand’s manual workload, enhancing efficiency.

Optimising UI

Our UI design focused on creating a seamless and intuitive shopping experience while staying true to the brand’s identity. Key design considerations included:

  • Clear and Well-Organised Layout: Structured menus and categories for quick and effortless browsing.
  • Search Functionality: Allowing users to instantly find the items they need.
  • Preview Shopping Cart: Enabling easy modifications before checkout.
  • Brand Consistency: Maintaining the brand’s original tone with strategic use of white space.
  • Bilingual Design: Catering to both the local and expat communities for greater inclusivity.
  • Systemised Design Elements: Standardised fonts, padding, margins, and colors to ensure future scalability.

Systemised Design Elements for Readability and Scalability

By systemising these key visual  elements, we enhanced readability, maintained brand consistency, and ensured scalability for future growth:

Typography Choices:

  • Quicksand (English) – A modern, friendly typeface with rounded terminals that adds warmth and approachability.
  • Microsoft JhengHei (Mandarin) – A clean, legible, and modern font that aligns closely with the brand’s identity.
  • Adjusted font settings to enhance readability, addressing Quicksand’s low x-height and tight spacing for better legibility.
  • Established a consistent typographic hierarchy to ensure clarity across different text levels, from headings to body content.
  • Both fonts are widely accessible online and built into most systems, ensuring ease of use for a small independent artisan brand.

Colour Adjustments:

  • Retained the black and white brand colours but opted for dark grey instead of black in text to improve readability and reduce eye strain.

Spacing and Layout:

  • Standardised padding, margins, and white space to create a cohesive and structured design.

Conclusion and Reflection

This project was a hands-on opportunity to solve real-world challenges for a small, independent brand through strategic UX and thoughtful design. Working closely with stakeholders, we transformed a fragmented, manual ordering process into a centralised, seamless digital experience. By grounding our design in stakeholder insights, we crafted a platform that not only reflects the brand’s values but also streamlines daily operations.

If the project were to be extended, I would integrate user testing and measurable outcomes to validate the design's impact more effectively.
